Fluted wood panels vs acoustic slat panels

They look alike in photos but are built differently. Here is how to choose between a machined real timber fluted panel and a felt-backed acoustic slat panel.

In short

Acoustic slat panels are separate strips — often MDF with a veneer or foil — glued to black felt to absorb sound. Fluted timber panels are one continuous real-wood surface machined with a profile, used like joinery for walls, doors and furniture. Choose slats for affordable acoustic treatment; choose fluted timber for a furniture-grade finish that can also be doors, drawers and curved elements.

Side by side

How they differ.

01

Construction

Slat panels are individual battens spaced over a felt backing, typically 2400 × 600 mm, fixed straight to the wall. Fluted timber is real veneer machined in one piece; there are no felt gaps between ribs.

02

Look and detailing

Slats show dark felt shadows between each strip and end in an open, stepped edge. Fluted timber has a crisp, joinery-grade edge that can be veneered, lipped or curved, so it can wrap corners and become cabinet doors.

03

Sound

Felt-backed slats are designed to absorb some sound. Fluted timber is a decorative surface and we make no acoustic claim — it can be combined with separate acoustic treatment if needed.

04

Cost

Mass-produced slat panels are cheaper per square metre. Fluted real timber costs more but is made to measure, in real oak or walnut, and matches doors and furniture in the same room.

05

Which to choose

For a quick acoustic feature wall on a budget, slats are fine. For a fitted, furniture-quality interior — panelled walls with matching doors, wardrobes, media walls or curved elements — choose fluted timber.

Guide / FAQ

Questions,
answered.

Practical answers before you order. Every project is confirmed on a drawing before production.

01Is a fluted panel the same as a slat wall?

No. A slat wall is separate strips on felt; a fluted panel is a continuous machined timber surface.

02Can fluted timber be used for acoustics?

We make no acoustic claim. It can sit in front of acoustic insulation designed by your consultant.

03Why are acoustic slat panels cheaper?

They are mass-produced in fixed sizes, often from MDF with foil or thin veneer. Fluted timber is real veneer made to measure.

04Can I get fluted doors to match my fluted wall?

Yes — that is one of the main advantages of real timber fluting.
